Order from Dubai: We Conceptualize and Design a Video-on-Demand (VoD) App for Children

Together with our technology partner Axinom, we have developed a Video-on-Demand (VoD) app targeted at 3 to 12-year-olds. The customer was e-vision, a subsidiary of the large telecommunication provider Etisalat from Dubai.

Definitely, new cultural territory for us! However, as we quickly realized, digital VoD providers are pursuing the same goal all over the world: They want to convince their customers with the best possible offer. And this includes a good user experience that is convincing conceptually, as well as creatively and technically.

The goal: Playful use on tablets and smartphones

All over the world, children like nothing better than playing and increasingly on digital devices. The aim of the ejunior VoD app is that children can experience content in a playful and safe manner. The app will be available in the various regions of the United Arab Emirates.

The task: Child-friendly user experience

Our tasks included consulting on the user experience, concept and design, as well as the UI specification, and the development of screens for mobile devices on iOS and Android. Of course, it was important not to overwhelm the kids. That’s why we decided to use a navigation system that works visually and allows the user to playfully explore the app.

The design: easy discovery of content

After developing different UI designs, the choice was made to go with an outer space scenario. This design is equally interesting for younger and older children as well as girls and boys alike. Through the combination of cute characters, a rocket and the universe, an independent world is created in which content can be discovered, such as alien planets.

We paid particular attention to the development of independent characters, with which the children can build a relationship. Six different little monsters entered the scene. These captivate and entertain the children through micro-interactions, such as winking or waving. This makes the app fun even when the children are not watching a video.

The onboarding: Communication via landing page

In addition to the app development, we also dealt with the sales strategy for the app. Based on the principles for good onboarding, we conceptualized and designed a landing page, which informs about the new VoD service for children, makes registration possible and, of course, makes you want to try the app.

We think the result is worth seeing and we are delighted that we have been able to realize this ambitious project despite a very sporting time frame. The new VoD app ejunior is now available in the iOS App Store and the Android version is on the Google Play Store.
